True Nature

Mixed media on driftwood by JW Bowen on exhibit September 1 — October

I think of this body of work, True Nature, as the result of a conversation between myself and the materials used. Beginning with a piece of found driftwood, uniquely forged by water and time, I numb my mind to the outside world and strive to find the voice within its form. I investigate the story found in its curves and explore the local Alabama habitat from which it came. With the natural world as my influence, I then begin to weave my response back into each piece. This collaboration between myself and each piece of driftwood revives once dormant materials and yields a neo-organic lifeform which is both foreign yet familiar.
